About the Flowers

Founder Kathryn Felt at Faraway Farm Alpacas, with ranunculus.

Wild Muse Flowers grows on a 50×100-foot hillside plot at Faraway Farm Alpacas in Upper Westchester. Though compact, the space is remarkably abundant. The soil, which was once pasture for decades, is rich and full of life. Now, it is carefully nourished by alpaca compost and minimal natural amendments. Flowers are grown with pollinators, birds, and biodiversity in mind, with no chemicals, pesticides, or synthetic inputs.

Over the course of the season, the plot nourishes 25 types of flowers, representing a range of focal and supporting flower families chosen for their productivity, texture, and diversity. Varieties are also selected for their uncommon beauty and distinct character within the flower market, which makes them especially suited for seasonal events and design work.

Focal favorites include tulips, daffodils, and ranunculus in spring; lilies, sunflowers, zinnias, lisianthus, and China asters in summer; and heirloom chrysanthemums and ball and dinner-plate dahlias in autumn.

Managed by Wild Muse founder and pianist Kathryn Felt, the field is an extension of her artistic practice: a place to explore cycles of growth and renewal reflected in music, and the synesthetic connections between sound and color.
